Homework Assignment #7

The Good-  http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/STUDENTS/Lui/index3.htm

The Internet has a big impact on ones life, especially for a student. Not only can students retain information from the Internet but also communicate with each other and gain knowledge from one another. For example, if a kid comes over from a different country and doesn't know how to speak english, he could use the internet to teach him because he might not have the ability to go to the library. College students use the Internet just about everyday. Either for their free time or doing school work. With out the internet the would not be able to do projects, and stay connected with each other. Today teachers use the internet to teach their students, which is a good thing because it saves trees and money.  In a way we are all connected, the Internet allows us to be even closer to one another. Social media is very hot right now with applications like twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and snap chat. These are applications that allows us to stay connected to one another. The internet is really beneficial for students and always will be.

The Badhttp://www.uwsp.edu/pointeronline/Pages/articles/Is-the-Internet-Making-Us-Stupid.aspx

Although the internet has its pros, it also has its cons. There has been a lot of talk lately about if the internet is actually making us more stupid or if google is really making us more stupid. In fact it is. Google is making people more stupid. This is because the immense amount of information that we see day in an day out on the internet. Every time someone is stuck on a question or doesn't know it they just google it. It registers in their mind but later leaves. In the article they make a good point. They ask the reader what did you search on google 5 days ago, and honestly i can't remember, and then the proceeded to say i bet you know more about a book you read 5 years ago than what you searched last week on google. Another problem with the internet is that people are always multitasking which makes them less productive which doesn't allow them to retain much information. The internet is always distracting you with adds and email or a message. This is why it is so bad because we can't do anything to stop it and our brains are not good enough to multitask.

The Ugly-  http://www.viralnova.com/troll-calls-boy-ugly/

People don't know how ugly the internet is until something actually happens. In this article a troll called a boy with down syndrome ugly. Who ever did this deserves to be punished. This is really offensive and shouldn't happen to an innocent boy. Things like these happen on a daily basis, including things that lead to suicide. Some people get attacked so bad that they can't live with themselves anymore. This is the ugly part that many people don't know of until they find out someone committed suicided for being cyber bullied or worse. People hide behind the computer screen and think they are so tough. People like this need to grow up because it is making people think bad of the internet.

Assignment 4: Thoughts on Network Neutrality

Pros
- offers protection and freedom
- Encourages creative expression
-Provides competitive market place
-No restrictions
- Allow start up companies to have easy access to new customers
- No censorship meaning can download as much as you want
Cons
-Companies with less money will have slower internet, which people won't like which will lead to no one going to their site
-Sites could be censored
- Sites could be blocked
- provide loopholes for unethical exploits
- Limits markets
- ISP's could block competitors

Some people are opposed of Net Neutrality because they argue that neutrality regulations will slow that advance of high speed internet connection and improvements of infrastructure. Big companies like youtube and verizon are opposed to Net Neutrality because they are very popular sites that many people go on every day, and when a lot of people are on it, they are slow. The big companies have to pay extra for faster internet while people are watching videos for free. People are in support of Net Neutrality because they can access any sit they want with out it being blocked or censored. People also don't have to pay for it either. For example, people are watching youtube videos every day that they get to watch for free and if Net Neutrality wasn't a thing they would have to be paying for it.

Freedom of speech is the political right to communicate ones opinions and ideas using ones body and property to anyone that is willing to receive them. Net Neutrality is tied to the topic "Freedom of speech" because people are allowed to post or say what ever they want on the internet. If Net Neutrality wasn't active then it wouldn't allow people to say or do what ever they want. For example companies like verizon could block social media where we can say anything we want.

The Federal Appeal court denied the right for internet providers to do block/ start charging people to use their websites. The recent news about Net Neutrality would have a big impact on me as a student.  I use/look at youtube videos just about every day, and if i had to start paying to watch videos there would be a huge issue because me being on my own i could not afford that.

Everyone person like my self should be in support of Net Neutrality. I am in support of it because it allows me to access anything i please. Net Neutrality allows me to say or do anything i want on the internet. I can stream videos at no cost. We shouldn't have to fix something that is not broken.

Assignment 3 B

I have nothing to hide
Some people think that they have nothing to hide, that is where they are wrong, especially when using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. I remember when i was younger i thought that having a Facebook was essential and if i did't have it i wasn't cool. In todays world, i'm scared to have one because i worry about what pictures go up on the website, and also someone could hack my Facebook page and post anything they want on it. That is always scary because if they posted something bad i could get in a lot of trouble. In high school i played hockey for the Varsity team and if a bad picture went up of me on Facebook, that could eventually lead to my coach which would lead to a suspension. People don't think this could ever happen to them but it happen to kids in my school. Some kids were just at a party and the Principal found out and suspended the kids. When applying for a job they do a range check on you and see what you post on to social media. In todays world once you tweet or send a picture, it will never disappear, it will always be in the system. People think by setting their settings to private or only friends that they will be fine and no one else will be able to see....Wrong!

Social Media and Privacy
Social media can be beneficial, or it can ruin ones life. In the Article When rape goes viral Social media, or face book ruins a girls life, because pictures and videos were posted of her black out drunk and kids laughing at her. Naked pictures of her was posted and going around her high school, and later she found out she was raped. At the age of 17 her life was ruined because of social media where everyone could see what had happened. She eventually couldn't take it anymore and hung her self in her bathroom. Kids that posted the pictures were bystanders and not doing anything about it but laugh. This is unacceptable, and what kind of sick person would do such a thing. Since these kids posted the pictures to social media, they will be there forever, even if you delete them.
